Dr. Joseph H. Hammer is a tenured Associate Professor of counseling psychology at the University of Kentucky's Department of Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology (EDP). Born and raised in the Chicago suburbs, I went on to complete my Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, Master’s of Education in Counseling Psychology at the University of Missouri, and PhD in Counseling Psychology at Iowa State University. Prior to starting my faculty position at the University of Kentucky, I completed an APA-Accredited Predoctoral Psychology Internship at the University of Maryland Counseling Center. As a counseling psychologist employed at a large, land grant university, I conduct research, teach/train/mentor students, and provide service to the local community, University, profession, and social justice activist organizations.

I am an associate professor at the Centre for Wellbeing Science within the University of Melbourne's Graduate School of Education. My research draws on multiple fields of inquiry, including health, positive, social, personality, and developmental psychology, and public health to address the question of thriving across the lifespan. I focus on understanding, measuring, and supporting wellbeing across the lifespan. I work with schools and workplaces to examine strategies for supporting wellbeing, and bridging gaps between research and practice.I have published 3 books, over 100 peer-reviewed articles and chapters, and the new, freely available Palgrave Handbook of Positive Education.
